SOMERS POINT — Friends are throwing an 80th birthday party for educator and community leader Jeanne Spangler Carlson on Saturday at the local American Legion.

Spangler Carlson, known to Mainland Regional High School students as Mrs. Spangler, led the gifted education program there for years. She left in the early 1980s to work for the State Department of Education promoting gifted education, was curriculum coordinator at several school districts and taught at Temple University.

While working for the state, she worked to pass a law requiring distircts to provide for their gifted students, she said. She worked as curriculum coordinator in Brigantine, Mullica Township, Absecon and Salem.

The former City Council member in Somers Point is now the secretary of the Somers Point Historical Society, president of the Friends Association of the Performing Arts Center at Richard Stockton College, and on the Somers Point School Board.

“I keep busy in the community. I love what I do,” she said.

Entertaining at her party from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. will be her friend Bobby Campanell, with lead guitarist Danny Eyer.
