New signs with reflectors warning drivers of a sharp curve as they approach the end of Bay Avenue in Somers Point may be installed soon.

City engineer Greg Schneider recommended the signage in an effort to resolve a concern of Sue and Phil Morris, whose property has been damaged twice by drivers who attempted the curve onto Ocean Avenue and ended up in their backyard.

The signs will include arrows with reflectors following the curve, as well as a “Curve Ahead” sign with a posted speed limit of 15 mph, Schneider said at Thursday’s City Council meeting.

The Morrises, who want a railing or bumper installed, were unhappy with the solution.

Councilman Howard Dill said it would be a liability for the city if a barrier were installed and someone were injured by it. He said that some years ago a barrier existed but was removed for insurance reasons because of the material it was made from.

Phil Morris suggested stop signs as part of the solution but was told that might not be effective if the incidents have been occurring at night.

The accidents resulted in $7,500 and $12,000 in property damage, Morris said.

Morris said he will talk with his insurance company and determine whether he could be liable if he installs a barrier of his own, such as a concrete post.

City Administrator Wes Swain will ask Public Works to order the signs and a resolution will be proposed to accept Schneider’s recommendation at the next council meeting, Oct. 25.

“If this doesn't work, we'll just move to Longport,” Morris joked after the meeting.
