Somers Point City Council will vote this week on repairing and reconstructing areas damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

If the ordinance authorizing $1.3 million is approved, the city will request a waiver of the usual down payment requirement from the state Department of Community Affairs.

The work that would be done includes $700,000 for the reconstruction of the bluff at Kennedy Park, City Administrator Wes Swain said, including installing a gabion. Architectural lighting and fencing would also be installed.

Another $500,000 would be designated for repairs and improvements to the city beach on Bay Avenue, including the damaged docks, pier, gazebo, floating dock and beach retaining wall. Following Sandy, the gazebo at the end of the pier was in the water and part of the pier was thrown up against the wall fronting the road.

Architectural lighting and controllers would be installed on Bay Avenue for $40,000, while another $60,000 would go toward installing new tide control valves along the waterfront.

“At the end of a couple streets, tidal valves allow water to drain out from storm sewers, but tidal water is not going in,” Swain said. “One was lost and one was damaged (during Sandy).”

City Council is scheduled to vote on the measure during its Thursday meeting at City Hall.
