The new Super Wawa being built in Somers Point could be completed in six to eight weeks, city construction official Jim McBrien said.
The combination convenience store/gas station is being built at Braddock Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, about halfway between Route 9 and the former traffic circle, at the site of what the city Planning Board referred to as “an abandoned KFC fast food resturant and an abandoned Pizza Hut.”
Approval for the Super Wawa was given by the Planning Board in December 2011. The 5,025-square-foot structure would be the city’s second Super Wawa, after the combination market and gas station at Ocean Heights Avenue and New Road.
Wawa Inc. did not respond to requests for comment about when the store would open.
The work takes place as several other Wawas closed since Hurricane Sandy in October are preparing to reopen. The West Avenue location in Ocean City is scheduled to reopen Feb. 28, with locations in Avalon, Margate, Long Beach Township and Ship Bottom to follow in March.
