The Atlantic City Hotel and Lodging Association Scholarship Foundation awarded scholarships to 17 students pursuing hospitality or culinary careers at its annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon on April 23 at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa.
The ACHLA Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than $300,000 in its history. This year’s recipients are students at Atlantic Cape Community College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Richard Stockton College, and Rutgers University. Many also work in area hospitality or culinary jobs. They included Miranda Lamey and Samantha Vicchiarelli, both of Somers Point.
Zerbe wins honorable mention in art show
Steve Aker, of Galloway Township, won the May Show by the Ocean City Fine Arts League, with “Santorini Shadow.”
Second place went to “Apple Blossom” by Chuck Law, of Ocean City; Honorable Mentions went to “Evening Glow” by Lance Balderson, of Seaville, “On Route 49” by Alisa Harris, of Seaville, “Quartet at the Point” by Carol Zerbe, of Somers Point, and “Schooner At Mallory Square” by Mary Alice Campanaro, of Ocean City.

Handler graduates from Alvernia University
Jesse Handler, of Linwood, earned a bachelor of arts degree in accounting from Alvernia University on May 11 in Reading, Pa. Handler studied at the university’s Main Campus.
Shore Medical Center honors outstanding caregivers
Shore Medical Center honored members of its exceptional staff on May 8 during the 2013 Caregiver Recognition Dinner held at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point.
Shore President and CEO Ron Johnson presented the Spirit of Shore Awards for Physician and Caregiver of the Year, awards that recognize physicians and staff whose actions exemplify the Planetree model of patient-centered care. Johnson presented the Physician of the Year Award to Dr. Julianne Childs, of Seaville. The Spirit of Shore Caregiver of the Year award was presented to registrar Elizabeth Barretta, of Northfield.
Shore Medical Center Board of Trustees member David Beyel presented the medical center’s Chairman’s Award, which recognizes employees for their contributions and commitment to Shore in both clinical and non-clinical areas. This year’s recipients were nurses aide Fernando Perez, of Somers Point, and nutrition care assistant William Dilmore, of Mays Landing.
