When 10-year-old Ciara Reeves heard about the new Yogurt Swirls frozen yogurt shop opening up in Northfield, her hometown, she crossed her fingers for gluten-free flavors.
Reeves has celiac disease, which causes gluten intolerance. Walking into the newly opened Yogurt Swirls in Center Point Plaza on Tilton Road, Reeves was in luck. The shop offers 16 flavors, all of which are gluten-free, plus many dairy-free, fat-free, no sugar added and low-fat options, too.
Ciara's mother, Brenda, said she predicts her family will be spending a lot of time at Yogurt Swirls this summer.
Yogurt Swirls is a newly opened self-serve frozen yogurt shop where customers can customize their own cup of frozen yogurt, choosing their own flavors and more than 60 dry toppings and more than 30 wet toppings. Customers then pay for their treat based on its weight.
Yogurt Swirls, which had its grand opening July 13, is owned by Longport resident George Siganos and managed by Stockton graduate Dara Lijoi.
Lijoi said opening day was a great success. The top-selling flavors were sea salt caramel pretzel, cookies & cream and a swirl of orange sorbet and vanilla, which made sort of Creamsicle, she said. Favorite toppings included bits of Reese's Cups, yogurt coated raisins, sour gummy worms and fresh fruit, such as strawberries and kiwi.
Frozen yogurt shops are really popular right now, Lijoi said.
"It's a West Coast trend that's made its way to the East Coast and now to Northfield," she said.
