Cape May County's American Legion posts are sponsoring a 'Hiring Our Heroes' veterans job fair from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Ocean City Music Pier. All veterans and their families seeking employment, networking opportunities, resume building and interviewing advice are encouraged to attend this free event. Employers with current openings also are encouraged to support our veterans by signing up for this free event. Some of the already registered employers include Lowe's, J.P. Morgan, Ocean City Home Bank, Coca-Cola and the city of Ocean City. Limited employers spaces are left and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Hiring Our Heroes job fair is part of joint initiative between the United States Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion organization at the national level. The program was formed in October 2011, and to date, more than 260 job fairs for veterans been held throughout the United States.
Ocean City American Legion Morvay/Miley Post 524 Senior Vice Commander Jim Scanlon, who is one of the main organizers of this event, said the Hiring Our Heroes is something that was needed in our country.
"Veterans were returning home and looking for jobs, and the unemployment rate at that time was in the double digits for veterans," Scanlon said.
The Oct. 11 Hiring Our Heroes job fair in Ocean City will be the fourth in state and the first held in South Jersey. The other three fairs took place in North Jersey. The American Legion New Jersey Department Commander Gene O'Grady approached Cape May County Commander Norm Marlin, Jr. and asked that Cape May host an event Scanlon said.
All seven Cape May County's American Legion Posts are sponsoring the Hiring Our Heroes job fair, and Post 524 is acting as its host. Post 524 will provide free coffee and refreshments on the pier during the event and will hold an open house at the post directly following the event from 12 to 3 p.m. to provide addition networking opportunities and information on how to become a member of the American Legion or the Sons of the American Legion. A light lunch will be provided.
Ken Byerly, member of Post 524 and an organizer of the event said as of Sept. 26, 105 veterans and their loved ones have registered for the job fair, which is an indication of a great success.
"We hear that's two times as much as the other New Jersey fairs had when they were at this point," Byerly said.
Byerly also wanted to note that walk-ins are welcome.
"The goal is to get as many veterans out there, so we can get them jobs," he said.
