Veterinarian Terri Marks, who runs the SouthPaw Animal Hospital in Cape May Court House, said she had great success last week showing her French bulldog, Bella, in the Super Bowl of dog shows.
Bella, 3, placed second for females of her breed at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City, competing in a breed class of 46 of the world’s best dogs, including Marks’ males, Sherman and Porter.
It’s the most success the Dennisville resident has had at Westminster in her five times competing there, Marks said. It was Bella’s first foray into Westminster.
“They’re competing against dogs that are campaigned,” she said of those that travel with handlers from show to show all over the country, racking up competitive points but rarely seeing their owners.
Her pooches are not pampered.
“We went up during the storm on Friday, and let them run like crazy fools in the snow at Central Park,” she said. “Then, Sunday night, I bathed them (for the competition Monday). They’re pets first, and show dogs second.”
A week earlier, her dogs competed in the Boardwalk Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show in Wildwood. Sherman took Best in Breed, and Bella took Best Opposite (in this case, Best Female).
Marks’ SouthPaw practice, which is about to celebrate its 13th anniversary, gets its name from her left-handedness, she said. She is married to Keith Woodrow, who works in dispatch for the Middle Township Police Department. She co-owns Bella with her mom, Darlene Marks, of Rio Grande.
