A demolition crew will start tearing down the historic Bellevue Hotel in Ocean City about 8 a.m. Thursday, and police will close surrounding roadways.

The 700 block of Ocean Avenue, from Plymouth Place to Eighth Street, and the 700 block of Eighth Street will each be closed in both directions.

Detour signs and advance warnings are in place around the site.

The building is being demolished because city inspectors have determined it is structurally unsound after years of neglect. The city has hired a contractor to remove asbestos from the structure and knock it down, and it will then place a lien on the property in order to be repaid for the work.

The city approved a $158,000 contract with Terra Technical Services, of Downingtown, Pa., to complete the work.
