MIDDLE TOWNSHIP - A township man was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a Rio Grande motel resident in the stomach.
Cape May County Prosecutor Robert Taylor said Michael Shelton, 51, stabbed Patrick Gimmillaro, 26, once in the stomach during an argument 11:45 a.m. Sunday at the Shelton Motel on the 1400 block of Route 47 in Rio Grande.
Gimmilllaro also was a resident at the hotel where he stayed in room 103. Shelton stayed in room 107.
The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, where he was admitted into the intensive-care unit where he was expected to recover.
Shelton was charged with aggravated assault, attempted murder and weapons charges. He was lodged Monday at the Cape May County jail on $150,000 bail.
If convicted, Shelton faces up to 20 years in state prison.
Employees at the hotel declined to answer questions Monday about the stabbing.
