Middle Township High School students dealt with the news Wednesday that five fellow classmates were injured in a car accident late Tuesday night on the Garden State Parkway.
Middle Township Superintendent Michael Kopakowski said he believed the students were driving back from Hammonton after watching the boys basketball team defeat St. Augustine Prep in the Cape-Atlantic League tournament semifinal Tuesday.
He said staff members of the district’s crisis team immediately went to the two hospitals to visit with the injured students and meet with family and other students in the hospitals’ emergency rooms. Staff was also available at the school to meet with students if necessary.
Kopakowski said he was relieved to hear none of the injuries are life threatening.
“It’s a scary thing when you get that phone call,” he said.
The crash occurred at milepost 15.5 southbound in Dennis Township when an SUV spun out of control and overturned before crashing into a guard rail at 8:48 p.m., police said.
The driver, Brittany Robertson, 17, of Cape May Court House, Hailey Murdok,15, of Cape May Court House, and Paige Cantz, 16, of Green Creek, were taken to Cape Regional Medical Center and were treated and released, police said.
Two other students ,Lauren Anderson, 15, of Dennis Township and Dylan Rhile 17, of Cape May Court House, were transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City with head injuries and are in stable condition.
