A 29-year-old Middle Township man allegedly shot a dog about 70 times with a BB gun while he was in a cage last month.

Police arrested Nicholas F. Spurrier, 29, of the Dias Creek section, on Wednesday on charges of animal cruelty and criminal mischief, police said. He was released pending a court date.

Police responded to the Animal Welfare Society on Route 47 in Dias Creek last month for a dog who was shot.

The dog survived, Capt. John Edwards said, but the veterinarian was not able to remove all of the BBs.

“This was a heinous act committed on this dog. We had to look at the X-rays with disgust, and (we) knew the dog suffered over a period of time,” he said. “My detectives did a fantastic job in closing the case with an arrest.”
