Some of Ocean City's biggest talents will come together Jan. 12 for an evening of musical entertainment and fundraising to benefit local Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
The event is callled the "01-12-13 Concert" and is modeled after the celebrity-studded "12-12-12" Concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief held Dec. 12 in New York City. Ocean City resident and professional vocalist Debbie Pruitt, a former Miss Cape May County and Miss New Jersey runner-up, is organizing it.
Pruitt said the goal of the concert is twofold: to promote the local arts in Ocean City and to raise funds for OCNJ C.A.R.E., a nonprofit dedicated to providing Sandy relief to Ocean City.
The concert will include performances by members of the Ocean City Repertory Theater, the Ocean City Theatre Company, Fox Vocal Arts of Ocean City, Ocean City Pops and more. A photo slideshow of storm damage will be on display throughout the show as a reminder of how far the city already has come since the storm.
"I wanted to reflect upon the devastation Hurricane Sandy caused, but at the same time highlight groups like OCNJ C.A.R.E. and the sense of community that has come out of this disaster," Pruitt said. "I'm impressed with the work OCNJ C.A.R.E is doing, and I'm proud to play a part in it. It shows that, as locals, we can come together and support each other and get though this. I coined the phrase 'Raising Funds and Raising Spirits' and that's the absolute goal of it."
Ocean City Repertory Theater Founder and Director Flossi Micciolo lost both her home and her Asbury Avenue theater to the storm. The black box theater was flooded with 4 feet of water, the ceiling in its back room collapsed and destroyed all of her costumes and props, the theater's electric and heating system needed replacing, the floors and walls had to be ripped out and more.
But despite great loss, Micciolo said the storm was a reminder of how great the Ocean City community is and how lucky she is to be a part of it.
"When I first got back into town, I was just so overwhelmed. I saw my theater destroyed, and all I could do is cry," she said. "I started talking to my neighbors on the avenue and within minutes, before I could even realize what was happening, people were there to help me. I didn't ask for volunteers. They just started coming, people I didn't even know."
Some Ocean City Repertory Theater members will perform in the 01-12-13 Concert.
"Debbie (Pruitt) called me and invited us to be a part of it," Micciolo said. "I'm excited. I know it's going to be an inspirational event."
