Ocean City will host its 41st annual Flower Show from May 31 to June 2. This year's theme is "Let's Go to the Movies."
The three-day event is sponsored by the city and staged, in large part, by the members of the Garden Club of Ocean City. It's held at the Ocean City Music Pier, typically drawing about 3,000 people.
Event Chairperson and Garden Club member Joan Shaw said anyone is welcome to submit a plant or floral arrangement into one of the show's two divisions: Horticultural and Artistic Design.
The horticultural division will include exhibits of bonsais, orchids, roses, iris, herbs and more, while the artistic design division will be divided into several categories, each based on a popular movie title to fit with the show's theme. Participants will have to incorporate the theme of the movie into their display.
"My Fair Lady" will be the theme of the novice category, which is for anyone who hasn't previously won a blue ribbon, "Star Wars" will be the theme of the suspended arrangement category, "Cleopatra" for the expressives, "South Pacific" for Orientals, "The Great Gatsby," for tea trays, "A Tribute to Disney" for miniatures, "Some Like it Hot" or "Doctor Zhivago" for shadow boxes and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" for the underwater displays.
The underwater display category is a brand new category this year in which arrangements must be displayed fully submerged in water.
"It magnifies the arrangement and adds a beautiful artistic element to it," Shaw said.
As with past shows, there will also be a junior category included in the artistic division open to children ages 14 and younger with this year's theme being "The Wizard of Oz." Participation is free; however, because there are limited spaces available, registration is required. All registered children will meet at the Music Pier on the evening of May 30 to create their arrangement. Plants and other materials will be supplied.
Submissions in both the horticultural and artistic design division will be accepted up until the morning the show opens, with additional details listed in the box below. Last year's flower show gathered 72 submissions in the artistic design division, Shaw said, and countless more in horticultural.
The flower show also has two artistic division categories that are closed to the general public, a table arrangement category themed as a tribute the 2013 Academy Awards and an invitational category, reserved for members of other garden clubs, with a theme of "Gone with the Wind."
There will also be vendors set up outside the Music Pier selling plants and other garden-related things and experts will be on-site to answer questions and share advice, including Rutgers Master Gardener Joe Alvarez who will be speaking about how to replenish soil that was damaged or eroded as a result of Hurricane Sandy as well as on what sorts of native plants are best suited for this area. Alvarez will be at the flower show Friday and Saturday.
"Come and be a part of it or just view it and enjoy it," Shaw said.
