OCEAN CITY _ A Tuesday afternoon fire caused extensive damage to a Tioga Terrace home but a woman and her pets were able to get to safety.

“The occupant got out by herself, no problem,” said Ocean City Fire Department Capt. Jim Smith.

The woman, who has not been identified, was able to leave with one dog and firefighters rescued another dog and a cat. One dog suffered burns and is being treated.

Smith said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined but he noted the house, an early 20th century summer bungalow, did suffer some flooding during Hurricane Sandy. Smith said the heaviest fire was in a back bedroom but the origin of the fire still has not been determined. The fire remains under investigation.

The fire was called in shortly after 2:30 p.m. Three engines and one ladder truck responded. Smith said the fire was under control in about 20 minutes. There was heavy smoke and firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate it. The house suffered smoke, water and fire damages.

“The damages are extensive. The contents of the house are lost,” Smith said.
