Owner and hair salon stylist Susan Kane of Susie Q's Hair Salon in Seaville is hosting a Pretty in Pink Party at her salon from 4 to 5 p.m. today, Oct. 3, to raise money for cancer treatment and support.

This is Kane's second consecutive year hosting the event, which is held in memory of one of her stylists, Lynette Cutro, who died of cancer, and to Kane's many clients who are affected by cancer.

"When you're in the hair industry, you get to know your clients, you build relationships," Kane said. "So many of my girls have cancer themselves and are going through chemo, or they're survivors of cancer, their loved ones have cancer. So many women are affected by this disease, and I'm just so inspired by them."

Their inspiration led to the Pretty in Pink Party concept. During the event, guests can get $10 pink hair extensions - which will last anywhere from two to six weeks - $8 pink nail polish, $10 T-shirts and $2 pink cupcakes and cookies. There also will be raffles, with three tickets for $5.

The proceeds of the event with benefit individuals affected by all types of cancer, but since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month Kane decided to use the pink theme to promote the cause.

Last year's event raised more than $4,000 for Gilda's Club of South Jersey, more than Kane had anticipated and the reason she decided to make it an annual event. Gilda's Club of South Jersey is a nonprofit support community based in Linwood that provides services to people living with cancer, their families and friends. The proceeds of this year's event will be split between Gilda's Club of South Jersey and The Cancer Care Committee at the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pa., of which Kane is an alumna.

"I wanted to pick charities where I know where the money is going and to help our locals," she said.

Kane said her ultimate goal is for every woman in Cape May County to be walking around with pink streaks in their hair. Already, she has put pink hair extensions in Ocean City School District's field hockey players, from the middle school to high school varsity level, and the girls of Dance Dynamics dance company in Seaville.

Ocean City field hockey coach Cory Terry said the pink extensions have added meaning for her players, as their freshmen field hockey coach, Mikenzie Helphenstine, is a breast cancer survivor.

"It's a fun way for them to support to support the cause," Terry said.
