Now that most schools are finally open, the question is for how long.
Some are still closed today for Election Day, but many are opting to stay open Thursday and Friday to make up the storm days now that the New Jersey Education Association convention scheduled for those two days in Atlantic City was canceled.
Gov. Chris Christie had urged schools to open, but the school calendar is determined by local school boards and decisions were based on the circumstances in each district.
NJEA spokesman Steve Baker said they encouraged members to work with district officials to come up with the best solution.
“If students have already missed a week of school, it might be better to go back and stay open,” Baker said. “But some schools may not be ready to open. Some may not open at all this year.
Both the Tuckerton Elementary School and the Ventnor Educational Community Complex are closed all week, but they are serving as community centers where people can drop off or pick up donations and food. Ventnor will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuckerton will be open from 9 a.m to noon through Friday.
School officials across the state are urging displaced families to notify districts of their new locations and if they will need assistance. Schools will send buses to evacuation shelters to pick up students as needed.
