The psychedelic pop group the Flaming Lips were the most theatrical band to play Friday during the opening day of The Dave Matthews Band Caravan.
They didn’t do a typical Flaming Lips show. In 2009, they released a recording of themselves doing the songs from Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” They performed “Dark Side of the Moon” mixed with songs from the movie “The Wizard Of Oz” on Friday.
Lead singer Wayne Coyne put himself inside of a giant plastic space bubble and rolled over the tops of the outstretched hands of the crowd that was squeezed in between the stage and the sound booth.
On each side of the stage, there was a group of people dressed like characters from “The Wizard of Oz,” mostly girls and women outfitted like Dorothy.
The giant oval screen in the middle of the stage showed fast-moving clock hands when the Flaming Lips played Pink Floyd’s “Time.” Since “Dark Side of the Moon” is a psychedelic masterpiece, the crowd knew the words and started singing along more than if the Flaming Lips were playing their own songs. Flaming Lips guitarist Steven Drozd was excellent playing the parts originally done by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour.
For "The Great Gig in the Sky," a woman came out in a bright green wig, a gold one-piece body suit and clear, plastic wings to sing the part on the Pink Floyd song originally sung by Clare Torry.
Coyne had another trick up his sleeve when it came time to perform the famous song "Money." He carried a giant white balloon over his head with dollar signs on it. Five times, he threw the huge balloons into the crowd and watched people rip the balloons open to try to get money that was visible when the balloons were popped.
Coyne said Dave Matthews and he put money into the balloons. Coyne watched as the wind repeatedly push the balloons towards the left side of stage towards the water.
"Later, we can take acid and jump into the lake and try to get it," said Coyne about the money.
Before leaving the stage, Coyne and his band performed the tune "If I Only Had A Brain" from "The Wizard of Oz" and told the crowd, "No one else would sing that song for you, except the Flaming Lips." He was right about that.
After performing the Pink Floyd song "Eclipse," the last song on "Dark Side of the Moon," Coyne and the band left the stage. The crowd clapped and shouted for more, but the Dave Matthews Band was scheduled to headline on the main Boardwalk stage five minutes after the Flaming Lips finished. The last thing seen and heard on the Atlantic stage after the Flaming Lips performed was a beating heart on the video screen and over the sound system.
