MANAHAWKIN — Southern Regional High School’s Class of 2013 overcame some major adversity in its senior year, including Hurricane Sandy.

And Principal Eric Wilhelm said the 504 seniors who graduated at the high school Friday will be remembered for how impressive their class was.

“How you have respect for each other, our seniors and for our fellow man,” he said. “You’ve made an impact on our school and community that will forever be present.”

The large class, dressed in black and yellow robes, are all brilliant in their own individual way, their valedictorian, Allyson Rong-Hoa Liu, told the crowd.

“After today, life is going to come at us a thousand miles per hour,” said the Stafford resident who will attend the University of Alabama in the fall. “I have no doubt that this class will hang on for the ride just fine. But it’s up to us to stop and appreciate the scenery every once and awhile, and today has one heck of a view.”

Salutatorian Danielle Smo-lyn, of Stafford, who will be attending The College of New Jersey, said the success of the class is due to the support the seniors have received from their family, friends and faculty at the school.

“We will never forget those who pushed us to keep going, those who always said, ‘You can’ when everyone seemed to be saying ‘you can’t,’” she said. “To the teachers and administrators: You are truly the most outstanding group of individuals we have ever met. Thank you for successfully preparing us for the future and giving us the best four years of our lives.”
