Ean Parsons, 20, of Galloway, learned about finding the 'crown' on a board from construction trainer Pete Higgins, 60. Higgins, a retired carpenter from Local 255, teaches the NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) Course at YouthBuild Atlantic City. He explained that wood is not always straight, but in fact it bows or crowns somewhere along the length. Students learn to build with the crown facing up, for better strength of the building. Students also learn to work with small tools such as this table saw.
