Petty Officer 1st Cass Joseph Ruggiero was a shipmate of Nathan Bruckenthal when he was killed in Iraq in 2004. Ruggiero, then 23, of Boston, and Bruckenthal, 24, of Long Island, were friends who had trained together and were teaching Navy sailors about boarding techniques.
