Cars were lined up for gas as the Brigantine Auto and Marine on Brigantine Boulevard in Brigantine on Saturday morning. The long lines continued into the afternoon, sometimes spilling into the right lane of traffic.
Chaser Gaffney, 29, of Atlantic City drives a car hitched to a trailer, and helps his father David Gaffney, 53, of Brigantine, haul his 20' I/O Regal out of the water at the Brigantine boat ramp on Saturday morning. "I'm pulling it out early in preparation for the wind," said David Gaffney. " I may keep it at the house (in Brigantine) or I may change my mind and hitch it up and take it to higher ground," he said. In any case he said he planned to wash the bottom and put it back in the water after the storm to do some striper fishing.
Bob Whedbee, construction manager of Balcerski Building Co. in Linwood, moves dirt high along the bulkhead of the house his company is building on 20th St in Brigantine. He hoped the huge pile of dirt would help protect the new construction, and it also carved out a place to put a dumpster full of building materials, that wouldn't get picked up until after the storm passed.
A billboard along the westbound lanes of Atlantic City Expressway, was made ready for the approaching hurricane, as workers removed every other panel of the structure, on Saturday morning, making for less wind resistance.
The boat ramp in Brigantine had a steady stream of boaters pulling their boats out of the water on Saturday morning. Paul Grayson, 59, of Williamstown, walking along the bulkhead, gets some help from Ed Potts, 47, of Brigantine. Debating whether to take the boat off the island, Grayson said he was hauling his 17' Proline with a 90 hp Johnson "because of the storm." "It'll be right back in as soon as the storm's gone - for stripers."
