On Dec. 28, 1969, a 14-year-old Atlantic City youth died in a fatal shooting. Various Atlantic City teen organizations approached city commissioners about building a recreation center.
On June 4, 1971, Neill Mitchell, executive vice president and general manager of the Atlantic City Press signed the final agreement transferring Press properties in the city to the Boys Club of Atlantic City.
On March 31, 1974, The Boys Club held its opening.
On Nov. 22, 1987, the Boys and Girls Club held a rededication ceremony for the newly remodeled club. Renovation cost: $50,000.
A new club, complete with air conditioning, a gym, computer center and other amenities, opened in May 2000 on Pennsylvania Avenue.
