ADVANCE FOR WEEKEND EDITIONS, JAN. 25-27--Patricia Donnelly, who was Miss Michigan, was Miss America 1939 and is shown in this undated photo. "Miss America," a documentary airing this month on PBS that weaves newsreel footage, period music and thoughtful analysis into a lively two-hour meditation on beauty, symbolism and 20th-century American women, answers many questions about the long running pageant and its meaning. Refreshingly evenhanded, the film tackles the pageant's intersection with race, sex and women's liberation, among other things, without sinking into gratuitous pageant-bashing. The film, which was entered in the documentary category of this year's Sundance Film Festival, airs Sunday, Jan. 27 (9 p.m. EST), as part of PBS' "American Experience" series. ** FILE ** Vanessa Williams, representing New York State, is shown during her coronation walk after she is crowned Miss America 1984 at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., on Sept. 17, 1983. Ten months later, on July 23, 1984, she resigned in disgrace after Penthouse magazine published nude, sexually explicit photographs of her taken before she entered Miss America. This time, it's Rebekah Revels, a 24-year-old English teacher whose quest for the crown may be derailed because of topless photographs. (AP Photo/Jack Kanthal, File)
