Diabetes walk

More than 2,000 walkers raised more than $120,000 for type 1 diabetes research and research-related education at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or JDRF South Jersey Chapter Walk to Cure Diabetes at Morey's Adventure Pier on the Wildwood Boardwalk on May 18.

"I have been dragged out of the closet - I have lived with type 1diabetes for almost 50 years," Jack Morey told the walkers.

The Walk was spearheaded by Corporate Chairpersons Lauren Ochs, assistant vice president of oncology, women's, and children's Services at AtlantiCare, and co-chairs Kathleen Bianco and Michael Block.

The JDRF South Jersey Chapter services Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties. The walk was sponsored by Wawa, Tony Luke's, AtlantiCare, Wildwood Tourism Development Commission, AOH Division 1 Cape May County and Morey's Piers.

Teplitzky challenge

Atlantic City's firefighters challenged the resort's police officers on May 18 at the third annual Big Teplitzky Challenge at the Chelsea Hotel. Teams competed to be the first to clear their plate of the mega 4-pound breakfast of pancakes, stuffed French toast, eggs, bacon, turkey sausage, pork roll, hash browns, grilled tomato, toast and a bagel.

The event raised $6,500 for The Andrew Fisher Memorial Scholarship Fund, in memory of Fire Captain James Fisher's son and Cop2Cop, a New Jersey based phone counseling service for law enforcement.

Firefighter Chuck Tartius won the event, devouring the meal in 11.28 minutes and winning an overnight stay at the Chelsea.

Arc fundraiser

More than $54,000 was raised to benefit The Arc's Family Support and Recreation programs at the Wine in the Woods event May 22 at Renault Winery in Egg Harbor City. The event recognized Isabelle and Ken Mosca of FACES 4 Autism and Pam Ginet of 21 Down for their work.

Major sponsors of the event included Cape Bank Charitable Foundation, Atlantic City Electric, AtlantiCare and Stalker and Associates.

Tournament raises $52,000

A full field of 22 foursomes participated in the 2013 Warren L. Buckingham Memorial Golf Classic on May 23 at the Stone Harbor Golf Club for the benefit of the Thomas and Claire Brodesser Jr. Cancer Center at Cape Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Domenic Coletta Jr., co-chair of the classic recognized the Cape Regional Medical Center Medical Staff for its $10,000 Title Sponsorship. The event raised more than $52,000 for the Cancer Center. Proceeds from the event were designated for the capital campaign and support of the Medical Center's Varian TrueBeam Radiation Therapy System.

Co-chair Dr. Gene Braga announced the winning foursome, The Saltzburg Group of Mike Saltzburg, Mark Saltzburg, John Murphy and Joe Mackin. Second-place winners included Bill Honan and Jake Perskie from Fox Rothschild and Byron Hunter from Cape Regional Medical Center and third place included Dr. Mike Boriss, Dr. Henry Komansky, Dr. Arthur Childs and Keith Babore from Cape Regional Medical Center.

Sea Isle walk

More than 140 walkers and many other contributors helped raise more than $10,000 for the Deborah Heart and Lung Center during the 2013 Gerard A. Desiderio Heart Walk on Sea Isle City's oceanfront Promenade June 1. The Heart Walk is named in honor of Sea Isle City resident and businessman Gerard Desiderio who died of heart disease in 2003 at age 43.
