Helping Deborah

The Sea Isle City Italian American Club Women's Auxiliary raised $8,000 for Deborah Heart and Lung Center with the 2012 Gerard A. Desiderio Heart Walk along Sea Isle's oceanfront promenade June 2.

About 250 participated, and many moremade donations.

SRHS scholarships

On June 6, 850 scholarships were awarded to 257 students of the Class of 2012 at Southern Regional High School by 284 donor organizations. The awards totaled $472,915.00.

The graduates gave back to the community on June 6 by cleaning the parks in Stafford and the beaches on Long Beach Island in time for Stafford Founder's Day and LBI-Fest.

Students helping seniors

During the school year, 15 students with Southern Regional High School's Compass Program volunteered on Wednesdays at Emeritus at Stafford assisted living facility in Manahawkin, Stafford Township.

The students planned and played recreation games such as, crosswords and hangman. Teacher Elaine Konzelmann coordinated the project, along with instructional aide Pat Briggs.

Quilt exhibit

The first Mostly Crazy About Quilts Exhibit May 3 to 5 at Cape May United Methodist Church in Cape May raised $1,100 for New Jersey Audubon's Nature Center of Cape May, said Executive Director Gretchen Whitman.

About 150 people came out to see handmade quilts, draped over pews at the church, and for refreshments and a flea market, Whitman said. The event also raised money for the church.

Sea Isle walk

Peyton's Promise 5K Run and 2K Family Walk in Sea Isle City raised more than $40,000 June 9 to combat the birth defect Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, which prevents lung development. Each year, 1,600 babies are born with CDH in the United States. Half do not survive.

More than 170 runners and 100 walkers turned out for the event, started by Dustin and Debbie Laricks, of Sea Isle. Their daughter Peyton, now 4, was born with the condition and survived after surgery. Funds go to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for CDH research and to help babies with lung problems. Visit

Millville FunRun

The Second Annual Heart of Millville 5K and 1 Mile FunRun/Walk attracted 150 participants, including many school children, teachers and 25 volunteers, on May 12 in Waltman Park. It raised $1,200 for the development of a Community Center in Millville, said Race Director Ed Einhaus, of the nonprofit AHOME Inc..

Student serve-a-thon

Atlantic Christian School, in Egg Harbor Township, held its first Serve-a-thon in May. About 400 students, from preschoolers through high schoolers, fanned out in the community May 11 and May 14, a school spokesperson said. They helped with spring cleanup at churches, picked up trash on beaches, and volunteered at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, and in nursing facilities.
