Tim McCline's dad Dave doesn't appear in some of the family's most important photos.

Illness related to exposure to Agent Orange during his U.S. Navy service in Vietnam left Dave permanently disabled and kept him from attending many family events, including Tim McCline's 2007 wedding.

Dave died in 2010 at just 62 years old, prompting Tim and wife Lori McCline, of Egg Harbor Township, to start The Dave McCline Veterans Memorial Fund.

Dave faced a lot of uncovered medical bills, like multiple drug copays, and it was difficult to travel to the closest Veterans Administration hospital in Wilmington, Del. for free treatment, said Lori McCline, a secretary in Egg Harbor Township High School's main office.

So the family is focused on raising funds for other veterans' uncovered medical needs and for educational scholarships.

It is holding its second fundraiser, a double elimination softball tournament on Aug. 11, and is still seeking more teams to play, but McCline said people should contact him immediately, in order to be on the roster for insurance coverage and T-shirts.

The organization hopes to start accepting applications for its first medical grant after the event, he said.

"Depending on what we raise, we want to give out at least one $500 medical grant to a veteran in need," McCline said. "We'll be sending applications to several Veterans of Foreign War posts and to the Veterans clinic in Ventnor."

The coed 1st Annual Softball Tournament Fundraiser will be a one-day double elimination tournament in which all teams are guaranteed to play at least two games, McCline said. It is for adults only, and will be followed by an after party 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Chickie's and Pete's at the English Creek Shopping Center in Egg Harbor Township.

"All players will be admitted as guests, and there is a special family and friends rate of $20 at the door," McCline said. The entry fee includes pizza, crab fries, soda, and domestic draft beer.

Greg Seher, of Absecon, is a former certified softball umpire who is donating his time to call the games, McCline said. Other volunteer umpires will also help. Philly Soft Pretzel Factory of Egg Harbor Township will provide concession support. Sponsors so far are Maynard's in Margate, Lexus of Atlantic City in Egg Harbor Township, Evolve Chiropractic in Somers Point, and CJ Adams Insurance.

The fee of $35 per player includes T-shirts for each player, a trophy for each member of the winning team and prizes for the winners and for the MVP. Anyone wants to play but can't field a team should call McCline about joining an existing team with space available.

About 50 people came out for the group's first fundraiser, a beef and beer at Chickie's and Pete's in Egg Harbor Township in April, which raised about $750, McCline said.

"The turnout was pretty decent, considering we were competing with Easter," he said. "Some Vietnam veterans came out who coincidentally had been stationed in the same city around the same time as my father, as did two Reservists about to deploy to Afghanistan."
