Beach cleanup

More than 100 volunteers came out Oct. 13 for the Sea Isle City Environmental Commission's Autumn Beach Cleanup and Dune Grass Planting , a city spokesperson said.

They collected debris from First Street to Townsend Inlet. Volunteers were treated to a complimentary buffet luncheon at Mike's Seafood Restaurant.

Autism group

FACES 4 Autism has a new chapter, a bilingual Spanish-speaking chapter in Vineland called Sol 4 Autism, said founder and Isabelle Mosca, of Ventnor. It joins two chapters in Atlantic County, one in Cape May Court House and one in Little Egg Harbor Township.

Breast cancer awareness

More than 50 Atlantic Cape Community College students, faculty and staff wore pink and met in the Mays Landing Campus Quad on Oct. 23 to create a human pink ribbon to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

United Way record

The Oyster Creek Generating Station in Forked River recently concluded the most successful employee giving campaign in United Way of Ocean County's 35-year history, raising $295,754 for services to Ocean County residents. The power plant has run an employee giving campaign since the 1980s that has increased each year.

Mammogram awareness

Christ Gospel Church in Whitesboro, has encouraged 65 women older than age 40 to obtain mammograms, earning it a $250 donation from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, through the Parish Nursing Program at Cape Regional Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson said.

Fitness fundraiser

Tilton Fitness raised more than $1,000 in its second "Turbo Kick Battles" in Mays Landing on Oct. 13, in honor of Barbara Sanders, a former group fitness instructor who lost her battle with cancer last March. For a $20 registration fee, members and nonmembers participated, benefitting the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.

Turbo Kick is an exercise class that mixes kickboxing with hip hop dance, burning up to 1,000 calories in an hour.

Gillan's donation

On Oct. 16 Gillian's Funland Amusement Park in Sea Isle City donated about $1,000 each to 10 local organizations, including the Sea Isle City Volunteer Fire Dept., the Sea Isle Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Bishop McHugh P.T.A., Mayor Desiderio's Holiday Food & Toy Drive, Boy Scout Troop 76 of Sea Isle City, VFW Post 1963 of Sea Isle City, Sea Isle City Women's Civic Club, SOS Sea Isle City Cat Rescue, Inc., The Gerald A. Desiderio Heart Walk, and Peyton's Promise.

Gillian's raised the funds during the summer of 2012, in its "Magical Mondays" promotions.

Hero Walk participants

Ten Cape Bank employees and family members participated in the 2nd Annual HERO Walk on October 14, 2012.

The team raised $290 for the HERO Campaign, which will be matched by Cape Bank to bring their overall contribution to $580.
