DJ of the Week: Paul Oakenfold

If you've listened to the radio or been to a club in the past decade, you've heard Paul Oakenfold. The well-known DJ has not only been wowing clubgoers around the world for years, but he has been featured everywhere from CNN to Rolling Stone to Remix and many others. He was also nominated for two Grammy Awards, and provided music for mainstream flicks that include "The Matrix Reloaded," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Die Another Day" and "Shrek II."

One of the most popular DJs on the planet, Oakenfold will make his way to Trump Taj Mahal Casino and Resort's Xanadu stage with his long-standing Las Vegas act, "Perfecto," on Saturday, June 6.

Oakenfold, who hails from London but now resides in the United States, attributes his years in DJing to his longtime love affair with music.

"Now that I've been professionally DJing for a while, I can say I do it because of how much I love music," he reveals. "I was always a big fan of music, and it seemed like the right thing for me to do. I liked to remix and produce, initially, and that's how I got into DJing."

Oakenfold is a man who is enthusiastic about and proud of his trade, which leaves no wonder as to why his "Perfecto" show has become a staple on the Las Vegas strip.

"At my residency in Vegas, I perform to more than 4,000 people a week," he explains.

But Oakenfold doesn't stop there; he is no stranger to our neck of the woods.

"I've been to Atlantic City once before, but I'm looking forward to coming again," he adds. "My show is in a casino, and from what I've heard, the crowd will be really absolute. It'll be great. And, of course, a lot of gambling."

Although Oakenfold's show does tremendously well in Las Vegas, he is not solely a live entertainer.

"I play live and do recordings," he explains. "My album is called 'Pop Killer,' which is coming out soon, and my first single will be with The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I'm currently trying to get all of my music up on my Web site, so that's the best place to check it out now."

Oakenfold also does remixes for various artists, most of whom request his services.

"When it comes to remixes, it's down to what people approach me to do," Oakenfold says. "I do all my own mixes and my own recordings, and that's why they ask me to do theirs because they've heard mine, and they like it."

What He Does: DJs and remixes music - of other artists as well as his own - and makes a more than memorable performance in his action-packed show, "Perfecto."

Musical Influences: Dr. Dre, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2 and Madonna. "I was in New York three weeks ago producing for Madonna, and I'm touring with her, as well," says Oakenfold. "I've worked with my influences, and I'm a big fan of all of them."

What To Expect: "I'm going to play a lot of what I'll play during my tour with Madonna, as well as brand new tracks from my album. This performance has been pulled from my Vegas show, which is a big production, so come along," Oakenfold says.

Fun Fact: Oakenfold's career has taken him all over the world, including the Great Wall of China, the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Korea and now Atlantic City.

Artist He's Worked With: U2, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez, Salt 'N Pepa and The Cure.
