Hooters and Bikinis

The weather's getting hot, and so is the competition inside the Tropicana Casino and Resort on Friday, May 15, in Atlantic City. It's not just spicy wings that'll get things cooking; it also has to do with more than 30 Hooters Girls striving to become Miss Attila Wings - pretty much the ultimate Hooters babe.

Friday marks the Annual Hooters Regional Swimsuit Pageant featuring Hooters girls from Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and even Rhode Island, all coming together in Atlantic City. Each girl represents her hometown restaurant, and they are all in the running for the big prize: Miss Attila Wings becomes eligible to compete in June's 13th Annual International Swimsuit Pageant in Florida. She will also receive a cash prize and a photo-shoot opportunity for the 2010 Hooters Calendar. These fine finalists gracing the Tropicana Showroom on Friday were selected from more than 100 Hooters girls, have won local swimsuit competitions and have been featured in the 2009 Hooters Calendar and Hooters Magazine, so you know the competition will be fierce and the looks will be fiery.

And it's not just the girls in the competition that will spark your interest; this gig is teaming with local hot shots and is even being hosted by the original Hooters girl, Lynne Austin. The judges for this event include TV-40 sports reporter Pete Thompson, JoJo, morning show host of WJSE 102.7-FM's "Morning Edge," Chuck Darrow, entertainment reporter for the Philadelphia Daily News, Raymond Tyler, columnist for Atlantic City Weekly and radio host on WTTH, and The Press of Atlantic City's Scott Cronick, editor of At The Shore and frequent guest of WJSE's "Morning Edge."

The pageant happens at 9 p.m. with tickets selling for $5. To make this event even sweeter, all ticket sales will be donated to the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer Memorial and mobile mammography unit, which benefits the greater Atlantic County region. And, if you get to the Trop early, swing by Hooters for a quick bite as well as a Hooters girls' meet-and-greet. The contestants will be waiting for friends and fans before the big pageant at 8 p.m. For details, call the Tropicana Casino and Resort at 609-340-4000.

Also on the hot list this Friday is the Somers Point Jazz Society Spring Concert, featuring one of the finest jazz musicians yet to grace southern New Jersey, Conrad Herwig and his quartet.

Herwig is known throughout the jazz world as one of the finest trombone players of his time. The New Yorker has recorded 19 albums, and his latest release, "The Latin Side of Wayne Shorter," was nominated for a Grammy. Herwig has also enjoyed musical success as a member of other jazz ensembles, including The Joe Henderson Sextet, Horace Silver Octet, Tom Harrell's Septet and Big Band, and The Joe Lovano Nonet. You may have also heard of Herwig from playing with and performing on records for artists such as Eddie Palmieri, the Afro-Caribbean Jazz Octet, The Mingus Big Band and several others.

But this Friday, Herwig and his quartet are all southern New Jersey's as they perform live at Gregory's Restaurant, 900 Shore Road in Somers Point. The Conrad Herwig Quartet, which also includes Bill O'Connell, Chris Brown and Kenny Davis, are scheduled to play two 50-minute sets, one at 9 p.m. and the other at 10:30 p.m. Admission to this event is $20 for regular guests and $10 for Somers Point Jazz Society members. This event offers limited seating, so it is recommended that you buy your tickets in advance by calling 609-457-7892 or go to www.spjazz.org.
