You can Jazz Around this weekend

Summer in southern New Jersey keeps heating up with its one-of-a-kind nights of jazz. On Sunday, Aug. 17, catch The Tony do Rosario Quartet at 8:30 p.m. at Gregory's Restaurant, located at 900 Shore Road in Somers Point.

The Somers Point Jazz Society brings this special show to the New Jersey shore, as this is the fourth installment of its Blue Moon Brewery Summer Jazz Series.

Rosario is a Somers Point native, so playing at Gregory's is especially exciting for him and also for those who knew him before he hit it big with the jazz greats on the West Coast. Rosario has shared the stage with such jazz artists as Andy Summers, Pat Martino, Howard Alden, Peter Bernstein and John Pisano just to name a few.

Also, while discovering his jazz talents, he created a concert series called "Tony do Rosario and His Six String Friends," which was made up of Ron Echete, Jimmy Bruno, Paul Bollenbach and Mundell Lowe. But Rosario is home sweet home this weekend, and he is also proudly promoting his latest CD, "The Welcoming."

Playing with Rosario this Sunday at Gregory's are Behn Gillece on vibraphone, Bobby Shomo on percussion and Dan Kostelnik on organ. For further details on Rosario, his new CD or the upcoming show, go to www.tonyguitar.com.

The jazz doesn't stop there. On Wednesday, Aug. 20, The Atlantic City "Jazzin' Around Town" Jazz and Blues Festival happens from 7 to 11 p.m. One of the leading acts on the "Jazzin' Around Town" bill is local favorite, Adelante with J. Jody Janetta. Adelante is well known for playing sold-out shows in Cumberland County, and now they are coming to Atlantic County for this special event. You can catch Adelante with Janetta at Defeo's Caf, located on 29 Missouri Ave., in Atlantic City.

Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased through the festival's Web site, www.atlanticcityjams.vpweb.com, or you can call them at 609-204-9466.

Lucky for you, if you can't make it to festival, you can catch Adelante on Friday, Aug. 15, at the Glasstown Plaza, located on High Street in Millville, from 6 to 9 p.m.

As far as the beach goes this weekend, you might as well snag a permanent seat at the Trump Plaza Beach Bar, located right off the Atlantic City Boardwalk at the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. Aside from the full plate of awesome live musical acts, you can also enjoy the Trump Plaza Kite Jumping Event on Friday, which is, without a doubt, best seen from the cozy and comfortable Beach Bar.

The Kite Jumping Event, which is sponsored by Full Throttle, combines aerial and aquatic acrobatics that will astound, amaze and leave you awestruck. The Kite Jumping Event goes from 2 to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, it's time to show off your stomach's skills because it's time for the Second Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest at the Trump Plaza Beach Bar. Stuffing your face is never quite as rewarding as it could be this Sunday, Aug.17, at 3 p.m. The event is open to the public, and if you're the one who devours the most dogs, you'll walk out of that Beach Bar with a full stomach and a grand prize of a $1,000 trip voucher.
