Shell show at Wetlands Institute
What Is It: Sure, lots of us have gone out hunting for shells on local beaches. But the shells at the annual Jersey Cape Shell Show and Sale aren't the kind your kids are likely to find on the beach down the street.
What To Expect: Many of these shells are exotic, and others are artistic, used by crafters as a basis for beautiful creations. And speaking of crafting, there are opportunities for kids to get crafty with shells from noon to
2 p.m. each day of the show on the institute's side porch.
Event Info: Show hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and Saturday and 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. Sunday at the Wetlands Institute, 1075 Stone Harbor Blvd., Stone Harbor. Tickets are $2 for adults; children 12 or younger are free. Also free for Jersey Cape Shell Club members. For more details, call 856-691-5831.
Sinatra tribute in Hammonton
What Is It: Frank Sinatra was famous for doing it his way, and in "My Way," Sinatra fans get a loving tribute to the Chairman of the Boards. The show runs this weekend and again next weekend at the historic Eagle Theatre, in the heart of Hammonton.
What To Expect: This tribute act stirs up a tasty cocktail of comedy, the Sinatra-Rat Pack shtick and, of course, the music that made the man a legend. Check out the classics that add up to the soundtrack of a lifetime for many Americans.
Event Info: Showtime is 8 p.m. today and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday, with the same hours next weekend. The Eagle Theatre is at 208 Vine St., Hammonton. Tickets are $22. For more details, see theeagletheatre.com or call 609-704-5012.
'Rock of Ages' at Caesars
What Is It: It was just a few months ago that this story made a small splash as a movie starring Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin, but now you can rock out live with "Rock of Ages" at Caesars Atlantic City, through Labor Day weekend.
What To Expect: "Rock of Ages" burns through a stack of hit songs from the 1970s and '80s, from "Don't Stop Believin'" to "I Want to Know What Love Is" to "We're Not Gonna Take It" - and a whole lot more. The show mixes the music in with an old-fashioned love story, and plenty of laughs along the way.
Event Info: Showtime is 9 p.m. today and every Tuesday through Sunday, plus an added 5 p.m. performance on Saturdays, until Sept. 2 in the Circus Maximus Theater at Caesars Atlantic City. Tickets range from $55 to $105 and are available at the box office or at PressofAC.com/tickets.
'101 Quilts' at African-American Heritage Museum
What Is It: Quilts have a long history as art in America, and were especially significant for some black Americans in the 1800s. Ralph Hunter, the president of the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, says that in the days when slaves were escaping from the South on the legendary Underground Railroad, quilts became a code to guide them to safe houses on their way to freedom.
What To Expect: The museum has opened "101 Quilts," which features a wide selection of pieces - some designed to fulfill the quilting tradition of telling a story, most colorful and all artistic. The exhibit is open through Dec. 15, and a meet-the-artists reception is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Event Info: The AAHMSNJ is in the Martin Luther King Center, 661 Jackson Rd., in the Newtonville section of Buena Vista Township. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and every Tuesday through Friday; or on Saturdays by appointment. See aahmsnj.org or call 609-704-5495.
