GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP—Not everyone can go home for the holidays, and some people don’t have nearby family to spend it with, which is why a long-term care facility is encouraging the community to adopt a resident in December.
Royal Suites Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center has begun its annual Adopt-A-Resident program, where family, friends, community members, businesses and organizations may give gifts or money to fulfill a resident’s holiday wish list.
The program is in its 10th year at Royal Suites. It will collect gifts and money through Dec. 19 for about 150 residents.
People in the community may contact Alicia Scaglione, director of activities, to learn how to participate.
Participants may request to adopt specific residents, and others may buy items to complete a resident’s wish list. People also may ask to be paired with a gender.
In addition to items on someone’s wish list, community members may donate money or gift cards for program coordinators to shop for items on residents’ wish lists.
Residents ask for everything from clothing to art supplies, personalized items and accessories.
Resident Doris Gamble said she and others have received framed poems, fleece jackets, body wash and lotion in the past through the Adopt-A-Resident program.
“I look forward to this every year. I really enjoy it,” she said.
