Since 1970, women from across the country have gathered in Atlantic City to compete for a crown.

No, this is not the Miss America competition.

The pageant, the finale of which will take place Thursday, is for women who have reached “the age of elegance,” in other words, the age of 60. Preliminary competitions will be hosted Tuesday and Wednesday at the Superstar Theater in Resorts Hotel Casino. All competitions will take place from 1 to 4 p.m.

The title of Ms. Senior America will be awarded to the woman who “best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all Senior Americans,” according to the Ms. New Jersey Senior America organization.

The annual competition focuses on issues and service that is particularly important to seniors.

“Today’s seniors seek growth through continuing education and community service in forums responsive to their special needs and lifestyles and Senior America is there to encourage those activities,” says a statement on Ms. Senior America Organization website.

Diane De Luca, of Linwood, is this year’s Ms. New Jersey Senior America.

De Luca was chosen as the New Jersey representative in the pageant in part for her singing talent, as well as her ability to spread positive messages throughout the state, according to the Ms. New Jersey Senior America organization.

She has entertained and performed for crowds on cruise ships, in night clubs and through private events, according to her biography on the organization’s website.
