32nd Annual Cape May Jazz Festival
What Is It: "A Tribute to the Count" is the theme of the 32nd annual Cape May Jazz Festival. The Count is the late William "Count" Basie, widely regarded as one of the most important jazz bandleaders of his time.
What To Expect: Featured acts during the jazz festival include the 17-time Grammy Award-winning, 19-piece Count Basie Orchestra, directed by Bill Hughes; the Ravi Coltrane Quartet; saxophone player and composer Richie Cole, left, who is dedicating his performance to his lifelong friend, Brian Trainor, a pianist and composer who died suddenly a couple of years ago; and Radam Schwartz, who will be pumping out driving rhythms on the Hammond B3 organ. Back at the jazz fest by popular demand is Barbara King, with her dusky, Sarah Vaughan-like qualities.
Event Info: All festival performances start at 9 tonight, except for the Count Basie Orchestra, which begins at 8 tonight in the Theatre at Lower Cape May Regional High School, 687 Route 9 in Erma. Live music can be heard at various venues around Cape May and will continue into Sunday. For a detailed schedule, visit www.capemayjazz.com. Tickets and passes, priced from $25 to $150, are available online or by calling 609-884-7277.
