Red, White & Blueberry Festival in Hammonton

What Is It: Once a year, in late June, Hammonton buzzes with excitement for its prime crop, blueberries. And for one Sunday per year, blueberry vendors, cooks and crafts producers gather at the local high school to show the region their wares. Think there's only so many ways you can package the blue stuff? Think again. Blueberry soap? Check. Blueberry lemonade? Yup. Blueberry mustard? Step up and try it.

What To Expect: Although fruit is the day's focus, there will be traditional rides, games and live music to entertain the family. More importantly, kids can compete for the first time this year as chefs-in-training: The blueberry bake-off, which invites cooks to prepare a dish of any sort using the berries, holds a junior division this year. Expect a range of fun food experiments and a phalanx of blueberry muffins.

Event Info: The festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hammonton High School on Old Forks Road. Admission is free. For more information, call 609-561-9080, or visit www.HammontonNJ.us

Shorecast

If it's not too much to ask for, we need a decent beach day. Even if we have had a few breaks in our June-long wall of gray lately, we need a whole lot more sunshine to dry things out, including our water-logged selves. So why not start with the first full weekend of summer? Well, if the early forecasts are right, we may get a look today at the sunshine and beach time we've been missing. The call is for sun, a high near 77 on the sand - OK, that's considerably cooler than normal for now - and just a slight chance of any more rain. Plus the ocean has been on our side lately - the water temp was flirting with 70 the other day.
