'With A Little Help From My Friends' at Appel Farm
What Is It: When Appel Farm's director, Sean Timmons, announced in March that economic straits had caused them to suspend their annual music festival, he said they had a back-up plan. They would gather a collection of artists, many already regular performers at the venue and sympathetic to its mission to present affordable arts events and education. Those singers and performers would headline a fundraiser benefit show, helping the center pay for its year-round programs and summer camp.
What To Expect: In keeping with the "one-off" nature of the day's show, the running order won't stick to orderly convention: The show kicks off with solo performances by Gillian Grassie, Grey Eye Glances and the Guggenheim Grotto. But then the remaining artists - among them soul performer Jeffrey Gaines, bluesman Guy Davis, folk-pop couple The Kennedys and folkie John Gorka (pictured) - take to the stage in an ensemble setting. Expect lots of sweet sentiment among the performers - toward one another, many of whom are friends locally, and toward the venue that has supported their work and others over the last 20 years.
Event Info: The concert runs from 2 to 6 p.m. at Appel Farm Arts and Music Center, 457 Shirley Road, Elmer. Tickets for 17 years and older cost $28.50, or $45 for undercover tent seating. Under-17s get free admission to the festival, or can pay $20 for tent seating. For tickets and more information, call 856-358-2472
Shorecast
Today, a little lesson in ocean temperatures. Check a chart of yearly water temperatures off Atlantic City and you see a nice, straight, upside-down V. The ocean starts an average year in the mid-30s, climbs slowly into the 60s by now, in June, and tops out about 73 in August before sliding steadily back down by December. But the water reaches those long-term averages with a bunch of bounces, often sharp, up and down. Take a few days last week: The ocean off Steel Pier was about 62 degrees at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Then it dipped to 59.2 Wednesday morning, before it shot straight up to almost 65 degrees that night. But Thursday, it was on the way back down. And the moral of our lesson? Easy: You never know what the water's going to do - unless you dip your feet (or more) in and find out.
