'Hawthorne'

Jada Pinkett Smith joins TNT's lineup of star actresses in maverick roles that include Kyra Sedgwick in "The Closer" and Holly Hunter in "Saving Grace."

The first episode of Pinkett's new show, "Hawthorne," showed promise as Smith portrayed Christina Hawthorne, the chief nursing officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital. She butts heads with doctors who don't want to give nurses respect and administers tough love to fellow nurses when they need it. 9 p.m. Tuesdays

'X-Men Origins: Gambit'

For those who already saw the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" movie and still want more mutant superheroes, Marvel Comics issued a comic book earlier this month that covers the origins of the character Gambit. He can manipulate kinetic energy and is skilled at card-throwing and hand-to-hand combat.

"X-Men Origins: Gambit" tells the colorful story of Gambit's early years in New Orleans, his first love and his banishment from his hometown during a feud between thieves and assassins.

'Purple Rain' tribute

Spin magazine is pulling out all the stops to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Prince's "Purple Rain" movie and CD.

A spooky version of the single, "When Doves Cry," performed by The Twilight Singers and Apollonia, is currently streaming at www.spin.com

The magazine's July issue contains a 10-page oral history based on new interviews. By buying the magazine, purchasers will receive a clue that allows for a free download of a nine-song tribute album.

'Revolutionary Road'

Some people believe Kate Winslet, above, deserved her best actress Oscar more for her work last year in "Revolutionary Road" than for "The Reader." You can judge for yourself as "Revolutionary Road" has been recently released on DVD. Winslet plays April Wheeler, a 1950s suburban wife and mother, whose unhappiness with herself and her life destroys her family.
