Tegan and Sara

You can skip the hit of energy received from your morning caffeinated coffee if you check out "Northshore," a 2:05 blast of guitar-driven, pop-punk power from the Canadian twin sister musical duo Tegan and Sara. Producer Christopher Walla, of Death Cab For Cutie, deserves some of the credit for the track's crunchiness. The song appears on Tegan and Sara's sixth full-length CD, "Sainthood," released last month on Vapor/Sire Records.

Mixtape T-shirts

Want to pick your favorite band for music recommendations? A new charity venture goes one better by asking a collection of bands for their mixtape recommendations - and then having the track-lists handprinted on T-shirts.

The limited-edition garments raise funds for the New York-based creative-writing non-profit 826NYC, and feature recommendations for tapes such as Best Break-Up Songs, from members of Of Montreal and The Hold Steady. (Available on eBay.)

'Dead Silence'

The thriller "Dead Silence" might not be Randy Wayne White's best, but his latest adventure featuring Doc Ford, a marine biologist from Sanibel Island, Fla., is still better than most mysteries out there. As usual, Ford channels a lot of fellow fictional boat bum Travis McGee as he romances the ladies and helps the needy - in this case a kidnapped teenager who is more than capable of looking after himself. But in this book White also seems to pay homage to Elmore Leonard with two inept Cuban kidnappers who are nonetheless chillingly deadly.
