'A Taste of Summer' at Steve & Cookie's
What Is It: The Literacy Volunteers Association's Cape-Atlantic branch was looking to break new ground with its annual fundraising. Organizers happened to get in touch with Cookie Till, the chef at Steve & Cookie's restaurant in Margate, and a prominent advocate for a style of cooking and eating that relies mostly on local produce. The result is an evening treating guests to everything with a local flavor - not just food, though dinner is the main draw, but also art and jewelry by local makers. Gifts and crafts will be available through a silent auction.
What To Expect: Farmers and other vendors, many of whom got involved through Till's summer farmer's market (pictured), had two options. They could either show their wares throughout the evening at a stall - or they could hand them off to Till, who would use them in her eight (or more) entrees. Look especially for local seafood, as well as Till's own elaborate hors d'oeuvres, and a well-stocked wine rack supplied by local vintners. Every penny raised goes to fund the work of the chapter, offering classes and tutoring in reading and writing to new learners and any adults seeking basic skills.
