Melissa Etheridge at House of Blues
Who Is She: More than some of her feminist peers, who resist categorization, Etheridge has been happy to assume and wear the mantles of every issue she stands for, including gay rights - a stance she has taken publicly since coming out as a lesbian in 1993. She is also a breast-cancer survivor, and is a supporter of environmentalism.
What To Expect: Etheridge's talent as a singer and guitarist will be presented all pared down, as part of her Live and Alone tour. All the better to hear her lyrics, which set off on a path of deep self-exploration, not just about her own feelings but the relation between her music-making and her sense of self.
Event Information: The show starts at 9 tonight at the House of Blues at Showboat Casino-Hotel, 801 Boardwalk, Atlantic City. Tickets cost $42 to $102. Call 609-343-4000 for tickets and information.
Jeffrey Ross at Borgata
Who Is He: Depending on who you ask, he's the homegrown Springfield, N.J., boy who's climbed the comedy ranks to roast some of the biggest names in celebrity-land. Or, he's the guy who got a scratched cornea midway through his stint on "Dancing with the Stars," courtesy of Polish dancer Edyta Sliwinska. Although Ross back then gallantly continued to compete - at least until he got knocked out in the first round - he later returned to the show to do what he does best: Caustically ripping the contestants in a final-round roast. (To 82-year-old Cloris Leachman: "Your score should have been 911.")
What To Expect: Ross has carved out a niche as one of the last insult comics, a guy who can happily pull in even the plumped-up and famous for some verbal teasing. Assume that he'll be pulling material from, yes, the audience, as he hits Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa tonight. As Ross posted on his official Facebook page recently: "Bring your ugliest friend." Also appearing is comic Dom Irrera.
Event Information: The show begins at 9 tonight in the Music Box at Borgata, 1 Borgata Way, Atlantic City. Tickets cost $35. Call 609-317-1000 for more information.
Counting Crows at Borgata
Who Are They: Started in Berkeley, Calif., in the early 1990s, the group takes its name from a folk rhyme usually said at the sight of crows and beginning, "one for sorrow, two for joy..." That uneasy swing from light to dark has turned out to be what the band charts best: Singer Adam Duritz wears his heavy dreads to give him the look of a tough clown, and lyrically laughs at the bitterness of relationships on tracks such as "You Can't Count On Me."
What To Expect: On top of a blistering onstage show, Duritz has a reputation for making his live renditions of songs more and more unique. At a landmark performance on Howard Stern's radio show, Duritz played "Round Here," but with extended and reworked verses and ending. So listen carefully; you may hear a brand-new song for the very first time. Also on tonight's bill is Augustana and Michael Franti and Spearhead.
Event Information: The show starts at 8 tonight in the Event Center at Borgata. Tickets cost $65 to $85. Call 609-317-1000 for more information.
