'How the Grinch Stole Christmas!'

The book: Dr. Seuss' classic was published in 1957.

The special: Not, repeat NOT, the Jim Carrey movie. This 1966 animated special narrated by Boris Karloff remains, with "A Charlie Brown Christmas," the gold standard for holiday fare. The Grinch, of course, dominates. But he wouldn't be so delightful without help from Max, little Cindy Lou Who and, of course, the roast beast.

'The Polar Express'

The book: Published in 1985; written by Chris Van Allsburg. It won the Caldecott Medal.

The movie: Almost 20 years after Van Allsburg's tale about a boy who boards The Polar Express to the North Pole one Christmas Eve was released, Tom Hanks, right, starred in the film, created with performance-capture technology. It remains a holiday staple on TV and in theaters.

'Olive the Other Reindeer'

The book: Published in 1997; written by J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh

The special: Drew Barrymore gave voice to Olive, an erstwhile dog who sets off for the North Pole to save Christmas when she hears that Blitzen, one of Santa's reindeer, is hurt. It aired on CBS once upon a time, and is available on DVD.
