Atlantic City Library hosts

tribute to Faith Ringgold

To mark Black History Month, the Atlantic City Free Public Library holds an unusual event today honoring Faith Ringgold, a woman of many talents. On her web site, the 83-year-old Ringgold is called a "painter, writer, speaker, mixed media sculptor and performance artist." But there's more to this retired college professor and New Jersey resident, because she is also known for making quilts as art, and the library's family-friendly event invites "participants to create their own quilted patterns using origami and construction paper." You can also look for a reading of Ringgold's "Tar Beach," her first published book, which won, among many awards, a Caldecott Honor and the Coretta Scott King award for the best illustrated children's book of 1991.
