Don't howl at the moon

- climb a lighthouse

What Is It: It must be a full moon tonight. Because both Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City and Cape May Lighthouse in Lower Township will open their towers for evening climbs, which is becoming a summer tradition every month on the night when the full moon hits the sky.

What To Expect: This evening's moonrise should be about 8:20 p.m. The idea of the full-moon climb is that you can be at the top of your favorite lighthouse when that moon pops up brilliantly over the ocean and the horizon - just as the sun is about to set for the night. So you should be in line for a double feature of spectacular views if you can make it up all those stairs tonight.

Event Info: Absecon Lighthouse is at 31 S. Rhode Island Ave., Atlantic City. Last climb is allowed at 9 p.m.; climbing fee is $10 per person, including snacks and beverages. Cape May Lighthouse is in Cape May Point State Park; night climbs are allowed from 8 to 10 p.m. for $7 for adults, $3 for kids ages 3 to 12. Admission is free to the ground floors of both lights. For more details, call 609-449-1360 (Atlantic City) or 609-884-5404 (Cape May). (Lighthouses may be closed during bad weather; call ahead to check.) Or visit abseconlighthouse.org or capemaymac.org
