Enoch "Nucky" Thompson and his rule over Prohibition-era Atlantic City is a hit with HBO viewers. So much so, HBO has renewed "Boardwalk Empire" for a second season, the cable channel announced Tuesday.

Sunday's 9 p.m. premiere averaged 4.8 million viewers to score HBO's largest premiere of any program in more than six years, according to a release issued by the channel. Additional airings at 10:15 and 11:30 p.m., brought the show's numbers to a combined 7.1 million viewers for the night.

"Boardwalk Empire" is loosely based on local historian Nelson Johnson's history of corruption and crime in Atlantic City.
