Jerkins shares family life, new music on reality TV show

Add reality TV star to former Pleasantville music producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins' list of credits.

Jerkins, 36, can be seen weekly in the show "House of Joy" 10 p.m. Thursdays on Jennifer Lopez's NUVOtv Network. His household is the focus of the show, which has: his wife of nine years, singer Joy Enriquez, their three children, RJ, 5, Heavenly, 3 and Hannah, 9 months; and his wife's mother, Helena; father, Randy; sister Tiffany and brother Josh, all living in his California home.

The series was filmed from April to June, eight hours per day, five days per week.

"We wanted to have another platform to deliver music. It was cool to be able to have a show, and my wife sings to the children at the end of each episode, and then, that song becomes available on iTunes," said Jerkins, who added eight original Enriquez songs will be available by the time the series ends Aug. 29.

Jerkins, a four-time Grammy Award winner, has worked with a who's who's of popular music stars during the last 16 years including Lopez, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and the late Michael Jackson and the late Whitney Houston. Jerkins was executive music consultant for the movie "Confessions of a Shopaholic," starring Isla Fisher, and was a mentor during season 10 of "American Idol." He also was a vice president of artists and repertoire for The Island Def Jam Group.

Besides being a showcase for Enriquez's singing and Jerkins' writing and production skills, the show gives a glimpse in their family life.

RJ plays the drums. Heavenly is always singing, but Enriquez's bubbly personality takes over the show. Jerkins said his wife, as portrayed on the series, had the same effervescent spirit that she does now as when they first met.

"It's another reason why I felt the show was necessary. I know she has a beautiful voice, but I always felt like people need to see her. Now, you get to know her and see her personality and who she is, and she has been like that since the first time I met her in Darkchild Studios in Pleasantville in 1999," said Jerkins, who added the minute he met Joy, he told her he would marry her someday.

The series cost at least $2.5 million to make. That amount of money for marketing and promotion cannot be generated normally, Jerkins said.

"This show for us is our trailer for the music. Of course, the goal is to get a second season and hopefully, a third season. We are the highest-rated show the network has ever had," said Jerkins, who added he is already negotiating a distribution deal with labels for his wife's new music. "It served its purpose well."

Even though Jerkins agreed to do the series, he said no one can prepare you for cameras filming your every move.

"We turned down other opportunities where their focus was drama, and we said that's not us. That's just not who we are. If we have situations that get a little hot, we know how to sit down and talk, communicate and work it out. We wanted people to know that what you see is what you get, so when you watch the show, it's really the way it is every single day," Jerkins said.

The most embarrassing event the cameras caught was when Joy planned a romantic dinner for two. The fondue caught on fire and other disastrous things happened, Jerkins said.
