'Nucky' author appears at A.C. Library
Who Is He: Frank Ferry, the Ventnor-based lawyer who wrote "Nucky: The Real Story of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Boss," will speak about his star subject today at the Atlantic City Free Public Library. The old-school political boss Nucky Johnson is the basis for the lead character in HBO's hit "Boardwalk Empire" series, but Ferry knew the real Johnson late in Nucky's life.
What To Expect: Ferry actually met Johnson in 1964, 23 years after the former boss was convicted in federal court for tax evasion. The young lawyer and his aging client stayed friends until Johnson died in 1968. Ferry will speak about his memories of Nucky, and answer questions about his book and its subject.
Event Info: Free. Starts 11 a.m. in the library's second-floor meeting room, 1 N. Tennessee Ave., Atlantic City. For more details, see acfpl.org or call 609-345-2269.
Jewel to shine at Golden Nugget
Who Is She: In a perfectly logical pairing of artist and venue, Jewel, the singer-songwriter, comes to the Golden Nugget, the Atlantic City hotel-casino, for a show tonight. And old-time fans can be assured that they'll hear their old favorites - the star is touring to promote her new album of greatest hits.
What To Expect: That means you're likely to hear her breakthrough hit from 18 years ago, "Who Will Save Your Soul," along with other big numbers from Jewel's past, including "You Were Meant For Me" and "Foolish Games."
Event Info: Showtime is 7:45 p.m. in The Grand at Golden Nugget, Brigantine Boulevard and Huron Avenue, Atlantic City. Tickets are $40 and $60. For more details, call 609-441-2000 or see goldennugget.com
return to Wildwood
What Is It: Competitive cheerleading is a growing trend these days, and the Wildwoods Convention Center has hosted the Mid-Atlantic championships for years. The competition is back today and Sunday, and it includes teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware. What To Expect: The squads start early and do their thing all day on a sprawling, springy floor. That setting lets the teams, including high schools, colleges and all-star ensembles, do routines that feature "aerial and acrobatic feats ... choreographed to music and sound effects," the promoters say.
Event Info: The cheering kicks in at 9 a.m. both days. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for kids ages 10 or younger and free for ages 3 and under. For more details, see SpiritBrands.org or call 866-522-4337.
