'A Couple of Blaguards' at Stockton PAC
What Is It: The play, "A Couple of Blaguards," by brothers Frank and Malachy McCourt comes to Richard Stockton College of New Jersey's Performing Arts Center for one performance this afternoon. It's a two-man comedy, with music, that recalls the McCourts' childhoods in the poverty and poetry of Limerick, Ireland.
What To Expect: Frank McCourt is the author of "Angela's Ashes," the best-selling memoir of his childhood. His brother Malachy is a veteran playwright, author and radio host. This collaboration features "bittersweet recollections, ferocious humor and a parade of colorful characters," including a priest with dire warnings of "sinners' eyeballs exploding in hell," the producers say.
Event Info: Showtime is 2 p.m. in the Stockton PAC, on the college campus off Jimmie Leeds Road in Galloway Township. Tickets are $25 and $40 for adults, with a $5 discount for seniors. Tickets are $10 for kids accompanied by adults. For more details, call 609-652-9000 or see stockton.edu/pac
Vineland show focuses on Mitchell, Cohen
What Is It: Lauren Fox, right, a singer and cabaret performer, is a lifelong fan of folkies Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. She brings her interpretation of their music, called "Love, Lust, Fear and Freedom," to the Landis Theater in Vineland tonight. The show features some of her favorites from the two singers - and draws from the knowledge the two stars were once lovers.
What To Expect: Mitchell and Cohen are mainly famous for their music, of course, and Fox's show includes plenty of that. She features 16 songs, nine by Mitchell and seven by Cohen - and always wears a fedora when she's singing one of his songs. She takes special delight in dealing with songs and lyrics the two lovers wrote for or about each other.
Event Info: Showtime is 8 p.m. at the Landis Theater, 830 E. Landis Ave., Vineland. Tickets are $22.50 and $30. For more details, call 856-691-1121 or see LandisTheater.com
Colbie Caillat comes to Caesars
What Is It: In 2007, Colbie Caillat was Billboard magazine's "Breakthrough Artist of the Year," after her first album, "Coco," came out. It didn't hurt that one of the tunes, "Bubbly," has become one of the top-selling digital songs in history.
What To Expect: Caillat also had a huge hit with "Brighter Than the Sun," a pop tune that tries hard to live up to that name. She's touring in conjunction with the release of her third album, "All of You," but you can look for her to mix up the old and the new in her show tonight at Caesars Atlantic City.
Event Info: The music starts 9 p.m. in the Circus Maximus Theater at Caesars, 2100 Pacific Ave., Atlantic City. Tickets are $32, $42 and $52, available at the box office. For more details, call 609-348-4411 or see caesarsac.com
Kids do 'Cinderella' at Cape May Stage
What Is It: The cast in the children's classic fairy tale, "Cinderella," has done lots of preparing for this production. The kids have been working on their roles since January, as part of the Cape May Stage theater company's first Winter Children's Theatre project.
What To Expect: The cast is mainly made up of students from fourth to sixth grade. But these kids aren't just acting in this show - they also helped create the scenery, costumes and more of the mechanics of the play. But the director is definitely a grownup, Debbie Lewis, whose credentials include 30 years of theater work.
Event Info: Tickets are $5. Showtimes are 1 p.m. today and 6 p.m. Sunday in the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, Bank and Lafayette streets, Cape May. For more details, call 609-884-1341 or see capemaystage.com
