Hero dog

A Labrador retriever in Michigan is being hailed as a hero after apparently saving a toddler who had fallen into a swimming pool. The Cass County sheriff's office says the 14-month-old boy was blue with his face up in the water when his mother found him Sunday afternoon at their home. Deputies say the family's dog had the boy on his back and was holding him of the water.

Wrestling bears

A group of Florida residents say their neighborhood is like a zoo and don't want anything to change. A recent video shows two black bears play-fighting on a lawn in the neighborhood. The fight spills over into nearby bushes and ends about two minutes later with both bears leaving in separate directions. Area residents say bears are part of the scenery for the area and shouldn't be relocated.

Choosy octopus

A giant Pacific octopus that's the star attraction at an Ohio zoo's new reef exhibit has chosen her name. A list of 2,200 suggestions submitted to the Akron Zoo in a public naming contest was narrowed to three options for the octopus, and she chose Cora - which is short for coral. The octopus made her decision by selecting the ball labeled Cora, pulling out shrimp stuffed inside, and then holding up the winning name with a tentacle as photographers captured the moment.
