Dock's Oyster House and the Knife and Fork Inn are regarded by locals and visitors alike to be among the best restaurants in Atlantic City. But they have some new competition - competition that the owners created themselves.
Frank Dougherty and Maureen Shay, co-owners and managers of Dock's Oyster House and the Knife and Fork Inn, are opening a new restaurant. Harry's Oyster Bar & Seafood, located inside Bally's Atlantic City, is having its grand opening Monday.
The restaurant is named after Harry Dougherty, Dougherty's great grandfather, and the man who opened Dock's.
Some might be uninterested. Why go to Harry's Restaurant for oysters when you can go to Dock's?
"(The food) is excellent at Dock's but it is more chef-driven food," Shay said, "Harry's has simple, fresh food, a much more casual atmosphere. It's pub-like."
From the layout of the restaurant to the space that it is located in to the vibe that it gives off, Harry's is totally original and independent from Dock's. The Margate couple, however, promise the same type of service and hospitable atmosphere their other restaurants are known for.
"(There is a) full raw bar, oysters come in daily. There are a dozen different varieties of oyster, fresh fish," Shay said.
"(The fish are) prepared your way," Dougherty said. The customer's choice of seafood will be cooked in the way that they like, with whatever sauce that they choose.
Dougherty and Shay completely renovated the space, once home to the Sidewalk Buffet, to create Harry's. The restaurant is located inside the restored Dennis Hotel part of Bally's. Diners will get a whiff of nostalgia as the face of Harry's has a view of the Dennis' famed courtyard. The restaurant is flanked by the Dennis Hotel's towers, painted in blue, red, and green.
Harry's is being dubbed a sports bar by the owners. It boasts nine flat-screen televisions inside and four outside, where there is a newly built outdoor bar. There are 10 beers on tap.
The Dennis Hotel's courtyard now opens up to the Boardwalk, which provides Harry's an advantageous position. The location and casual feel is inviting to people right off the Boardwalk.
Harry's Oyster Bar & Seafood will be open for lunch and dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. daily.
